Freth's Local Server Starter Guide

This is a quick starter guide for playing on a vanilla local server.

The main goals from the outset should be first aid (survival), large cart (transportation, speed to escape fights, storage), tools for various tasks.

The vanilla local server starts you with 25 mind logic and 25 body control. This means you will be able to drive a large cart and ride a horse right away.

Things to Know

  • Stamina depletes as you walk, climb and do actions.
    • Be careful on steep grades. If your stamina runs out from climbing you will fall down the hill and take damage.
    • Be careful around water. If you run out of stamina while swimming you won't have any to climb out of the water on a steep grade.
    • Be careful not to disembark from a vehicle on a steep grade as you'll slide down the hill and may not be able to get back to your vehicle.
    • I like to stop my action queue when my stamina reaches half so that it can recover. The lower your stamina gets the longer it takes to do actions. Stopping and recovering stamina halfway makes what you're doing quicker overall.
  • Food and water are a necessity.
    • Water affects stamina recovery. Stay hydrated. I recommend being near a natural water source and/or storing water in containers from a water source until you can make a pendulum to detect a water tile and build a well.
    • Food affects stamina, movement and actions. If you are low on food you will become weak.
    • You start with a pottery bowl. Use it to cook meals in a campfire. Add ingredients and use the Lore menu option on the pottery bowl to test if a recipe makes anything.

Initial Goals

  • Find an area with exposed rock.
  • Be on the lookout for horses in the area, or bulls or bison (bison have a bonus to speed). Lead and ride a horse if you see one nearby. Lead another if you find one. These will be for your large cart.
  • Find an area with some trees.

Preparatory Tasks

  1. Forage for cotton to treat wounds (first aid).
  2. Rummage rock tiles for iron rocks.
  3. Cut down some trees and chop them into logs.
  4. Make a mallet out of planks and shafts.
  5. Make a campfire out of 1 wood scrap and 1 kindling (wood scrap + carving knife).
  6. Fuel the campfire by activating wood in inventory and right clicking the fire and Burn.
  7. Examine the fire and ensure it says “long time”.
  8. Set down your tent and use it for temporary storage. Also use your backpack. If you have a horse led, hitch it to the tent. Let the other horse wander. It shouldn't go too far.

Transportation

Build a large cart.

  1. Make 25 planks, 10 shafts and a yoke.
  2. Make and finish two small wheels.
  3. Make an unfinished small wheel axle with one small wheel and a shaft (1.0kg is a full shaft).
  4. Finish the small wheel axle with the unfinished small wheel axle and the other small wheel.
  5. Make a small anvil (requires 3 iron rocks converted to lump in campfire; recommend get 5 or so rocks). You'll get .80kg lump per iron rock. A small anvil requires 2.0kg lump.
  6. Make 4 small nails with the small anvil and lump you have left.
  7. Complete the large cart.
  8. Get a 10+ql log and use it to improve the large cart past 10ql so it can be driven. It may ask you for another improving tool. If so you'll need to get more rock to make the tool it needs. Once the large cart is improved past 10ql stop.
  9. If you didn't find horses yet, go find horses and lead a horse, then ride it. Ride to the other horse and lead it. Go back to your large cart and hitch the led horse, then get off your mount and lead it and hitch it to the cart.

Storage

  1. Make small crates. Load the crates into your large cart. Use the crates to store resources.
  2. Make a large chest to store tools, weapons and other unique items (non-resource items). Load the large chest into your large cart.
  3. Offload your resource items from your backpack and tent into your crates.
  4. Pick up and stash all items from your work area. Explore with your large cart to find a camp location.

Camp

  1. Find a spot near a guard tower or near a village with guards and set up nearby. Use the guards to your advantage until you are skilled enough to set out on your own and be safe. You can call guards to an active aggressive target by saying “help” in local. After 20 seconds you can call more guards. You can do this multiple times until all guards are engaged in the battle.
  2. Open a mine.
    1. Dig dirt down to rock. Tunnel to open a mine. Prospect cave tiles and analyze rock shard to search for an iron vein.
  3. Use the rock and clay from a shoreline deposit to make a forge and oven.
  4. Work on making the rest of your tools. Use the small and large anvil recipe lists (crafting window; B) to guide you in what you should make.
  5. Make horseshoes for your horses to make them faster, or find some bison which have a bonus to speed.
  6. Work on fighting skill.
  7. Consider making a boat like a cog, corbita or knarr to travel greater distances and explore the map for a spot to settle.

Settling

The determining factor for moving from temporary camp to a more permanent location should be your fighting skill vs the mobs in the area you want to settle.

Skill up in fighting skill according to your needs and find a location to make your home.

Deeding a settlement requires coin. Just how you earn coin on a vanilla server I don't know, but I expect it is a long arduous process to make enough to settle, and to upkeep a settlement.

Priest

I haven't tested it, but I assume the vanilla local server has priest restrictions, which means you'll want to make an alt to be your priest.
